The full title is the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, and the contest gets its name from its main sponsor, luxury watch manufacturer Blancpain (headquarted in Switzerland, Blancpain is the worlds oldest surviving watchmaking company, having been incorporated in 1735. Their watches are owned by people as diverse as Russian leader Vladimir Putin and American movie star Brad Pitt. The races in the series tend towards endurance races, with differences between the cars carefully assessed and allowances or weightings made to even these out – much like handicapping in horse racing. This is to give every driver the opportunity to win their races on their skill alone, rather than relying on superior engine power or design innovations.
